What do I do about a WordPress memory exhausted error?

After installing or updating a plugin or theme you may start getting errors like “Allowed memory size of xxxx bytes exhausted”. This means for some reason you are exceeding the servers default memory setting.

We can usually fix memory exhausted errors  by allocating more memory to your site. However you first should try to fix it by increasing the memory limit in WordPress.

To do this:

  1. locate the wp-config.php file in your WordPress root folder
  2. Open the file in a text editor
  3. On the second line after the <?php tag at the line  define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’);
  4. save the file and close the editor

If this doesn’t work for you,  contact us and we’ll see if we can find the fault.

How do I move my WordPress website?

Before you begin to move your WordPress site, read the following articles:

http://wp.smashingmagazine.com/2013/04/08/moving-wordpress-website/  Read the section ‘Uploading A WordPress Website From A Local To A Remote Installation’

http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

There are a few steps to this upgrading the site

1. Backup and remove the old site

  • ftp into the ‘web’ folder on the server (usually ‘html’, ‘public_html’ or ‘web’)
  • make a folder  on your computer and download the old site to it
  • delete all files and folders in the web folder except any system files like ‘stats’,’logs’, ‘webalizer’ and ‘error’ folders

2. Upload the new site into the ‘web’ folder

3. Edit wp-config.php to match your mysql settings

4. Make sure the upload folder has the permissions ‘777’ – you should be able to do this with decent ftp program like Filezilla

5. Using phpMyAdmin, import the wordpress database tables into your database

6. If this is done right you should be able to login

There are a couple of plugins to help with migrating. You may need to install these into the development site before uploading to the server.

How do I report a problem?

When reporting a problem you need to provide as much useful information as possible. Please do not send us a message saying something like "it doesn't work".

Where possible please provide us with the following information:

  1. When the problem occurred.
  2. How the problem occurred.
  3. What you were doing when the problem occurred.
  4. Copies or screen captures of any error messages, software configurations, etc that may be related to the problem.

To do a screen capture in Windows do the following:

  1. Hold down the "Alt" key and press the "Prt Scr" key.
  2. Release both keys. This will put a copy of the active window into the clipboard
  3. Paste it into an email or into a word document
  4. email to us.
